    The Department of Architecture of the University of Patras and specialized researchers in the field of defensive architecture are pleased to announce the 1st International Meeting on “Defensive architecture during the early and transitional period of artillery fortifications in the eastern Mediterranean (early 15th –early 16th century)”, which will be held in Patras, between 11 – 13 June.The program will include scientific papers relevant to issues of defensive architecture of the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, and research on fortifications of the early and transitional period of artillery from the early 15th century to the early 16th century, until the prevalence of the bastioned system.The conference aims to address issues of history, architecture, and technology of these lesser featured fortifications in the bibliography and to examine the period of gradual establishment of artillery in defensive architecture, when the initial conditions for the transition from the medieval fortifications to the elaborated fortifications of the bastioned system are formed.The Conference consists of the following thematic sessions:
    a) architecture of fortifications of the early and transitional period of artillery,
    b) artillery technology,
    c) terminology of defensive architecture and artillery,
    d) historical research,
    e) artillery fortifications, cities and settlements
    The presentations will be delivered either in Greek or in English. The organizing Committee intends to publish the Proceedings of the Symposium.
